In what could be the latest deadly assault on Kenyan military in Somalia, the Al-Shabaab militants have claimed responsibility in Friday night attack, Somalia's Radio Garowe has confirmed.
Reports indicate that the militants attacked a KDF camp on Friday night in Qoqani village near Afmadow in South Juba region of Jubaland.
During the attack, the Al-Qaida associates used Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs) and mortars on the KDF camp and claimed to have 'killed several officers'.
The KDF team is said to have also launched an assault in neighbouring villages after the heavy exchange of gunfire with the militants.
Kenya Defense Forces team is yet to respond to claims of the latest onslaught against her officers, with DoD going silent for the second day in a row.
AMISOM, the UN-backed troops in which KDF operates in, has not yet formally confirmed the attack as well.
If confirmed officially, this will be the first successful assault by Al-Shabaab in a KDF military base in two years. Al-Shabaab attacked last in 2017 at Kulbiyow military base where over 70 soldiers died.
At El Adde in 2016, the KDF team suffered the most deadly assault in which over 200 soldiers are estimated to have died.
During that time, Commanding officer at the barracks asked families of the departed soldiers never to speak to the media, in what is seen as sustained Government efforts to conceal information about the attack and its aftermath.
"KDF has only one line of communication, which is very formal," the officer, identified as Major Ekai, said in a warning to the families.
This comes just a week after the Al-Shabaab released a 52-minute video of her leader Omar Ahmed. The US on Saturday dismissed the video, insisting that the group was dwelling on propaganda.
