McDonald Mariga is back in the news thanks to his decision to throw his hat in the Kibra parliamentary race, a move that has not been without controversy as you would expect.
Many Kenyans know that he wore the number 17 shirt for the Harambee Stars football team but not many know about his beloved parents who brought him into this world.
Noah Wanyama, Mariga's father, met with his wife Mildred Wanyama in the 1970s while the two were working for the Kenya Railways.
It is sports that brought them together with Mariga's father then a footballer and the mother then a netballer.
"I was just a junior clerk and he was a senior clerk and we met because of sports (na tukikutana tulikutania kwa michezo). We were in KICOSO games. I think that's how we started dating and then we ended up married (Nafikiria hapo ndio tulianzania mpaka tukakuja kwa maisha ya kuoana)," Mildred Wanyama, Mariga's mother, told Royal Media Services-owned Citizen Television.
In spite meeting more than 30 years ago, their love for each other has never waned.
Sports runs deep in the blood of the family with McDonald Mariga having played top-flight football in Europe.
Victor Wanyama now plays for Tottenham Hotspurs.
Their sister Mercy Atiso Wanyama plays for the national basketball team.
Noah Wanyama played for AFC Leopards for 16 years and also played for the national team Harambee Stars.
Mariga was handed over the nomination certificate to fly Jubilee's flag in the Kibra by-election.
