Mr Alvim uttered the scandalous words while promoting a national arts prize as one of Hitler's favourite songs played in the background.

"Brazilian art in the next decade will be heroic and national,” Mr Alvim said as quoted by the Guardian newspaper.

"It will be endowed with a great capacity for emotional involvement and will be equally imperative, since it is deeply linked to the urgent aspirations of our people, or else it will be nothing,” he added.

In his defence, the culture secretary said that the similarity to the words of the propaganda chief of one of the most brutal regimes in history was nothing beyond rhetorical coincidence.

Brazil's far right president Hair Bolsonaro reacted to the development, saying that the words of the minister did not reflect the values of the Brazilian society.

"I reiterate our rejection of totalitarian and genocidal ideologies, such as Nazism and communism, as well as any inference to them. We also express our full and unrestricted support for the Jewish community, of which we're friends and share many common values," the Brazilian head of state said as quoted by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).
