Ainabkoi Member of Parliament William Chepkut now says he supports the planned eviction of people from Mau forest.
The MP said as long as it’s vital to conserve the environment people living in the forest should be compensated before being evicted.
“I am number one when it comes to conservation of the environment, but those people living in Mau are our relatives and should be treated with humane and decorum by being given alternative places to settle,” he said.
Chepkut who was speaking to the press in Eldoret town on Monday reiterated that the Mau evictees are just like other Kenyans and should not be forced out of the forest and their houses burnt.
“I call on President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto to intervene by ensuring before any eviction is conducted, those people are compensated since it is not right to leave them in the cold as they don’t have a place to call home,” insisted the MP.
The first time legislator who won 2017 polls as an independent candidate, however, called on politicians to be sober while talking about the Mau issues which he said might incite locals.
He expressed the need to discuss the matter with relevant authorities.
