A section of residents from Legebet village, Ziwa town, Soy Sub-County, Uasin Gishu County on Monday killed a stray cheetah that was spotted in the area.
Confirming the incident, Sirikwa Location chief Samuel Maritim said the marauding animal which was spotted in the morning had been moving from village to village.
“We received information from the public that there was an animal which resembles a cheetah that was hovering around, immediately we tried to trace the animal with residents and was found in a place called Kiborokwo in Ziwa,” said the Sirikwa Location chief.
Maritim who spoke to the press in Ziwa on Monday said despite residents reporting to the police on the same in the morning by 3 Pm they had not shown up forcing residents to look for the animal manually.
“Residents became impatient and armed themselves and went to attract the stray cheetah which they killed in the evening since most of them were afraid that if the animal could be left alive it could have killed both animals and human beings,” added the area chief.
Maritim, however, called on the residents to be on the watchful since there seems to be an outbreak of stray cays in Uasin Gishu and that they should ensure they get to their homes early.
He called on the Kenya Wild Service (KWS) to take good care of their animals noting that they are a threat to the residents once they stray.
