A suspected criminal has committed suicide in Embu County, after playing a cat and mouse game with the police for days, as they sought him for engaging in illegal operations.
Kithaka Kithauni, a notorious illicit alcohol brewer, reportedly hanged himself in Makengi village on Thursday, after learning that the police were looking for him.
The deceased had been on the run for five days, considering that he managed to escape a police raid on his home on Saturday, where 200 litres of illicit brew was impounded.
And while villagers believe that the man who had been selling a local brew called "Machore" murdered himself to evade the law, the police believe that he did it over something different.
Confirming the incident, Chief Inspector of Police Kaberia Mbiti said that the deceased might have committed suicide owing to a family disputes with his relatives.
"We suspect that the brewer decided to kill himself after he picked a quarrel with some of his family members over unknown reasons," he said, adding that investigations have began.
He also cautioned locals against making speculations on the matter and let the police do their job, adding that they will now destroy the illegal beverage they were keeping as evidence.
"The suspect is already dead and we can't continue keeping the exhibits at the police station," he added.
