The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) received a total of 18 cases of harassment of journalists during the just-concluded party primaries.

Victor Bwire, a programmes manager at the council said the journalists were mainly harassed by police, politicians and their supporters.

Bwire said this during a training session for journalists from Nation Media Group in Nairobi on elections and conflict sensitive reporting.

He asked journalists to be vigilant and to take their security seriously.“We must be careful when dealing with politicians and their supporters. - Victor Bwire.On Tuesday, journallists in Kakamega County staged peaceful demonstrations over harassment and threats from the police and politicians.They demonstrated along the busy Kakamega–Mumias Road from Shianda market to Mumias East Sub-County offices and presented a petition to Deputy County Commissioner Willy Cheboi.Daily Nation correspondent Shaban Makokha was assaulted by administration police officers at Shianda Trading Centre while photographing youths fighting over money given to them by a politician. "They clobbered me with rungus and threw me into a waiting police Land Cruiser, which drove to Shianda Police Station where I was locked up for close to three hours," said Makokha.
