An 18-year-old man was on Wednesday sentenced to 20 years in prison by a Kiambu Court after he was found guilty of defiling a 12-year-old girl.

Mr Simon Ekaredi Omoto was being accused of defiling the minor on the nights of November 5 and 6, 2016 at Kiambea village in Karuri location of Kiambu County.

The accused person was also facing an alternative charge of committing an indecent act with a minor.

The mother of the minor in her testimony told the court that on the material day she arrived from work late and found her daughter not at home but a neighbor informed her that her daughter had gone to fetch water.

The mother got worried because it was late and started looking for her until 9pm and she decided to report to Karuri police station that her daughter was missing.

At the police station, the mother said she was instructed to return the following day if the daughter did not return home during the night.

The following day, she returned to the police station where she was given an occurrence book number and instructed to ask the nearest Administration police office to assist in tracing her.

Later that day her son called her saying that his sister had returned home and when the mother got home, the girl told her what happened.

The minor managed to identify the house where she had spent the night and after she identified the defiler, the mother reported the matter at Karuri police post leading to the arrest of the accused.

The accused person denied the charges before Kiambu Senior Resident Magistrate Brian Khaemba and in mitigation he pleaded for leniency promising never to repeat the action.

Magistrate Khaemba sentenced the accused to 20 years imprisonment but gave him 14 days to appeal the ruling.
