Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen has weighed in on the dramatic arrest of Nairobi governor Mike Sonko.
In a tweet on Friday after the flamboyant county boss's arrest, the senate majority leader invoked the maxim of presumption of innocence until proven guilty.
He described the governor as his friend and said that he wished him well following the arrest.
"Gov.Sonko enjoys his Constitutional right to be presumed innocent till proved guilty. He is my friend&I wish him well as he proves his innocence. You don’t run away from friends. I also know many governors; Mombasa, Machakos, Siaya etc who have protected coz they are politically correct(sic), " the governing Jubilee senator tweeted.
The Nairobi governor was arrested on Friday after the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Hajji issued an order for his arrest.
His arrest, according to media reports and the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission, happened in Voi.
The governor was reportedly trying to evade arrest.
Charges levelled against him by the EACC relate to money laundering and the use of public office for personal gain.
Sonko has long protested his innocence, saying that the charges are politically motivated.
He has positioned himself as the corruption buster and cartel destroyer in what political observers have framed as an attempt to improve his image in the public's eye.
The DPP said that the governor will be arraigned in court to face the charges.
