The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has raised concerns over the Kisumu County Government's recent decision to move its dumpsite from Kachok to Kajulu.

According to the KAA, the dumpsite is located along the route used by flights accessing the Kisumu International Airport, which might result in bird-flight collisions, which will in turn cause accidents.

According to KAA operations and safety manager Harrison Machio, such collisions can have a great impact on planes, resulting in emergency landings, losses or even crushes.

"One bird strike can bring down an aircraft and associated losses, including loss of lives,” he said, adding that the airport was recently left with a Sh500,000 bill after a bird strike.

The dumpsite is located 12 kilometres from the airport and is home to scavenging birds, which Machio says makes planes prone to colliding with the birds.

This comes at a time when the KAA is on the spot for failing to provide scaring kits at major airports to scare away the birds since there is still no technology to keep the birds away.

This also comes at a time when the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) continues recording cases of bird strikes, which on most occasions result in emergency landings.

Similar cases have been recorded at the Moi International Airport in Mombasa.
