The debate on the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) can easily split the country, university lecturer Prof. Edward Kisiang'ani has warned.
Kisiang'ani, a history, and political science tutor cautioned that if the BBI will be interpreted as a 2022 succession contest between Deputy President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga, divisions will emerge among citizens.
In a tweet on Friday night, the scholar called for a sober and objective debate to avoid causing serious political unrest which will tear up the nation.
"As long as some people look at the BBI as a tool to thwart DP Ruto's presidential ambitions or a platform for Raila to ascend to power, there will be no objective and sober debate on the matter. This BBI thing could easily divide our country more than we already are now," Kisiang'ani posted.
The BBI taskforce will on Tuesday hand over the report to President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila after 18 months of moving around the country collecting views on how to address Kenya's longstanding challenges such as negative ethnicity and lack of inclusivity in national leadership.
The Head of State on Friday urged Kenyans to carefully read the proposals in the report before deciding whether to support or reject it.
He further urged political leaders to be cautious when discussing the report saying it should not be used to divide Kenyans.
