Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has dismissed claims that his political outfit is losing grip of the Ukambani region after losing the hotly contested Mutonguni Ward by-election.

Speaking during a burial ceremony on Monday, Kalonzo said that the party still controls the region even after Maendeleo Chap Chap Party’s Musee Mati defeated Wiper’s Stephen Kithuka.

The contest had been considered as a litmus test between Kalonzo and Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua before the latter emerged as the best.

He insisted that win in the by-election doesn’t in any way reflect the influence of the party. Kalonzo also said that the candidate won out of the mercy of the residents and not Mutua’s control of the region as claimed.

“It’s not a big deal. There is nothing like Chap Chap in Kitui. They only won fairly through mercy that people of that ward had on the young man. This was not a contest between political parties, if it were, then Chap Chap would have appeared nowhere,” said Musyoka, as quoted by Standard.

Kalonzo also said that he regretted working with Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana and went to apologise to the Members of the County Assembly after their fallout.

He divulged that he wished he had listened to former speaker Stephen Ngelu and Majority leader Francis Mutuku. Mutua and Kalonzo are fighting over the control of the region ahead of 2022.
