Police in Kisii county on Monday evening found 185 bags of contraband sugar in one of the supermarkets in Kisii.
Discounty supermarket in Kisii county was found selling contraband sugar yesterday evening the 18th of June 2018.
Francis Nguli who is the OCPD from Kisii led police officers to the supermarket and 50kg bags were found with illegal sugar. The bags had a label of Transmara Brown Sugar.
The OCPD then said that no business will be spared in the on going crackdown and he said that, the commodity should undergo analysis with the help of the Kenya Bureau Of Standard (KEBS)
“The commodity will undergo analysis with the help of the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) and government chemists who will ascertain its content before action is taken accordingly,” said the OCPD.
Mr. Patel Bhagat the owner of the supermarket said that he was innocent and had followed the legal procedures in purchasing the commodity.
It is said that the product was purchased from the industries in Transmara.
"The product was purchased from Transmara Sugar Industries and Sukari Industries denied repackaging it,” OCPD said.
