Mudavadi has repeatedly been quoted attacking Raila lately, especially on his stand on constitutional changes, and even accuses him of political betrayal in his new book.

Political analyst Javas Bigambo says that these attacks point at a man preparing himself for political life without Raila, who he observes is the force behind Mudavadi's political success.

“For years, Mudavadi has been seen as a Raila man. It was Raila who removed him from political rags and that has stuck in the minds of most voters in Western,” he said on Thursday.

His remarks were echoed by political commentator and politician Brian Weke, who says that Mudavadi is also trying to get hold of his Western Kenya bedrock.

He says that coming at a time when leaders of his calibre are trying to consolidate their bedrocks to have a major say in the 2022 polls, Mudavadi is also trying to do the same.

“All political leaders now are seeking to control their areas for purposes of creating formations. Mudavadi is trying to consolidate his backyard. He is trying to recreate himself,” he told the paper.

However, Mudavadi's bedrock remains one of the most divided, given that some leaders from the region have declared support for other national leaders.

Currently, the region is divided between Mudavadi, Deputy President William Ruto and Raila. Mudavadi is also battling for the kingpin seat with Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetangula.
