In the book, Mudavadi says that he was haunted by the ghosts of the scandal that saw Kenya lose billions of shillings in dubious dealings.

It is only after a Commission of Inquiry led by Justice Bosire cleared him of any blame that he saw it fit to return to active politics.

At the height of the scandal, people that he considered close friends abandoned him.

His phone calls went unanswered.

"It was a season of anxiety. You kept wondering whether there will be justice or vindictiveness on the weighing scales of the commission,” Mudavadi writes.

“At this time, too, the people to call friends were very few and rare. People who previously telephoned you six times a day could now not pick your call. The phone would ring on and on and go off. Sometimes it was nipped in the bud of the first ring," he adds.

Mudavadi was appointed to the plum Finance docket by President Daniel Arap Moi at the time when the Goldenberg plot was being hatched.

A company owned by businessman Kamlesh Pattni called Goldenberg International was at the centre of the shady scheme that was to see the businessman paid by the government for exporting minerals.
