A section of Democratic party leaders have unveiled two articles of impeachment which they say will form the basis of removing the president of the United States of America from power.
According to the articles, President Donald Trump improperly solicited foreign influence for political gain hence putting national security at stake.
“In all of this, President Trump abused the powers of the presidency by ignoring and injuring national security and other vital national interests to obtain an improper personal political benefit," the first draft of the article read in part as quoted by New York Times.
“He has also betrayed the nation by abusing his office to enlist a foreign power in corrupting democratic elections," it added.
Trump has described the impeachment proceedings against him as an act of political madness.
The second article of impeachment charged that the US president harmed the constitutional rights of the House of Representatives by ordering White House officials to defy subpoenas.
The impeachment proceedings were triggered by the allegation that Trump deliberately leveraged aid and a White House meeting to pressure the President of Ukraine to investigate the Democratic party front-runner in the presidential nomination race.
For Trump to be ousted from power, at least two thirds of the members of the Senate will have to vote in favour, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reported.
