It emerges that founding Vice President Jaramogi Oginga was among the weapons that were to be used to prevent former president Daniel Moi from rising to the presidency after the death of Jomo Kenyatta.
The plan was hatched by Kenyatta's personal physician and Cabinet Minister Njoroge Mungai, who was part of the change the constitution movement, and who wanted Oginga to help in ensuring that Moi doesn't take the post.
The first meeting to woo Oginga, who already in bad terms with the Kenyatta allies, was held in a secret meeting at his house in Kisumu, where Mungai was represented by Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Munyua Waiyaki.
Waiyaki would later tell journalist Kamau Ngotho that Oginga accepted to join the referendum team on a condition that he is assured of his safety should the Moi and Attorney General Charles Njonjo team learn of the plot.
After also being convinced that Kenyatta was aware of the plot, Jaramogi accepted to join Mungai's team, resulting in a secret handshake at Nakuru's Midland Hotel on June 1, 1976.
Munyua said that Kenyatta accepted the plan after the group told him that the plot would also bring Oginga closer, making it easy to control him and his opposition to the government.
Consequently, Jaramogi was to send his ally, Achieng Oneko, to the first rally in Nakuru, which was a success, as he received a rousing welcome in Nakuru, a place he previously represented in parliament.
Oginga was to personally attend the second rally in Mombasa.
Kenyatta opposed the rallies, saying that if he indeed wanted to help in the constitutional amendment issue, Oginga should have begun with rallies back in Nyanza before venturing in the remaining parts of the country.
He soon called off the entire amendment issue, but this was not going to tame Oginga and Mungai, whose next plan was to vie for KANU president and vice president respectively.
With Mungai as the Vice President of KANU, it would have automatically reduced Moi to nothing, making his presidency an impossibility.
but the elections would later fail to happen, after they were called off at the last moment, followed by Kenyatta's death before the changes, which saw Moi assume the presidency.
