In the wake of claims by close associates of Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi over a looming political alliance between him and President Uhuru Kenyatta, Deputy President William Ruto will no doubt be forced to go back to the drawing board to keep his State House ambitions.

If the claims by Lugari MP Ayub Savula of a looming Uhuru-Mudavadi alliance are anything to by, what next for Dr Ruto?

President Kenyatta's decision not to back his deputy for the top seat come the next poll will no doubt handicap the DP's statehouse ambitions. But if the latest political situation in the country is anything to go by, then Dr Ruto could be prepared for any eventuality.

With over 4 million votes at stake in the Western region, a supposed Mudavadi backyard, the DP will be forced to explore other options in order to keep his dreams to get a share of those votes.

So, is Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula and his former Kakamega counterpart Boni Khalwale the people to neutralize Mudavadi in the region?

Then there is former Budalang'i MP Ababu Namwamba who has already pledged his support for Dr Ruto. But can the trio completely water down Mudavadi's influence?

With over 25 years in politics, Wetangula is one of the most decorated politicians in the country. Having served as Senator for seven years now, his influence can never be overlooked. And having been one of ODM leader Raila Odinga's political pillars for nearly one decade now, the FORD Kenya leader is the man Ruto seriously needs.

As for Khalwale, his dalliance with the DP is no longer a secret. With a huge following in his native Kakamega County, the former Ikolomani MP is another man to ignite the Ruto tidal wave in the region.

Then there is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Chief Administrative Secretary, Ababu Namwamba. During his good days, the vocal lawyer was a political force to reckon. Can he deliver for Ruto come 2022?  Time will tell.
