At least 4,500 litres of illicit brew was destroyed in Boronyi, Kisii on Wednesday morning in a crackdown led by chiefs and assistant chiefs.
The crackdown lead by Nyaura Chief Yobesh Mose was launched to deal with the vice that is reportedly said to be increasing.
Yobesh told Hivisasa that the crackdown was paused to allow residents to be enumerated before they resuming on Wednesday.
"We paused the crackdown which had already taken shape. This decision was arrived at to allow residents to be counted. We are back again with full force," he said.
Yobesh added that illicit brewers used the enumeration period to revert to their business which has been outlawed.
"They are back to their business. The break gave them an opportunity to brew more. The litres we have poured today are evident that still, we have much to do."
The chief vowed not to relent on the war against illicit brew stating that "As long as we live, illicit brewing must come to an end in this area. We send a warning to those engaging in the business that will not tire until we clean this area."
Residents have congratulated the chiefs saying the availability of illicit brew was a recipe to broken homes, increased crime and a high rate of students dropping out of school.
"We have suffered for decades. Its a problem that has broken families, children have dropped out of school," Jane Kerubo averred.
