Kisii Governor James Ongwae was among the top leaders from Gusii region who turned up during the burial of Stephen Mogeni at Kerumbe in Borabu constituency, Nyamira County.
At the burial which was attended by thousands of mourners, Ongwae revealed that he knew the business tycoon in the 1970s.
"I knew the late Mzee Mogeni from 1970s. He was a selfless, talented educationist where he served to the rank of a senior officer.
"After retiring from the civil service, he perfected his management skills in the agriculture sector, with vast interests in the dairy, coffee and tea sector," noted Ongwae.
According to Ongwae, Mogeni's contribution to the society in the field of Agriculture will be greatly missed.
Further, he said, the building of Mogeni Tea Factory by the tycoon has been important in creating job opportunities for hundreds of people.
"My prayers and thoughts are with the bereaved Omogeni family, his wife Miriam Wambui, his children, relatives, friends, the people of Gesiaga in West Mugirango and Kerumbe in Borabu, omogusii as a whole and the entire nation whom the late served with passion," he said.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i, who was among the mourners, also termed the tycoon as hardworking, adding that his contributions to the economy will be cherished forever.
