Nairobi County Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko on Monday gave the Kenya Men’s basketball team a heroic welcome.
The team, popularly known as the Morans, played in the finals of the FIBA Afrocan competitions in Mali, where they lost to Democratic Republic of Congo.
"During arrival of Kenya national basketball team, "the Morans" at JKIA after excelling at the FIBA AfroCan basketball tournament in Bamako, Mali. Despite losing to DRC in the finals, Kenya excelled in the continental tournament by beating other established teams," said Sonko.
This was the first time the Morans made it to the finals of such atop tournament.
Losing 61-82 against a Superior Congolese side was the worst result they got in the tournament. Interestingly, the two teams had meet in group stages where Congo still emerged the winners.
Governor Sonko was at the JKIA to welcome the team back home.
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka also joined in welcoming the team back home.
"We welcome you home #Morans for an amazing performance at the basketball Africa cup of Nations in Mali.Well done.Kenya is deeply proud of you," said Kalonzo.
