Police in Nyamira County have launched investigations into an incident where unknown assailants killed a middle-aged businessman after breaking into his house a few metres from Nyamira Town on Tuesday night.
According to Nyamira County Commissioner Amos Mariba, the incident which occurred at about midnight was reported to them by concerned neighbours who had a commotion and gunshots at the victim's home.
Mariba said the police have already barricaded the building as they put in place measures to arrest the culprits who escaped before the officers got to the crime scene.
“According to the preliminary reports from the officers on the ground, the businessman identified as Julius Ondabu was hit on his head several times using a crowbar. The attackers shot in the air to scare away neighbours who had gone to help him,” said Mariba.
The police boss further noted that the assailants destroyed security cameras in the compound before fleeing the scene.
“We suspect that the assailants must have accessed the compound either before he had arrived or forcibly when he was coming home,” said Mariba.
The body of the businessman was taken to Nyamira Hospital morgue.
