Police in Homa Bay County are holding two people accused of raiding a local Non Governmental Organisation's (NGO) offices on Sunday and looting it in the process.
A section of locals from Kitanda clan are said to have descended on the NGO, demanding to reclaim the expensive land it sits on, though it is the same community that contributed the land to the NGO some 20 years ago.
Rachuonyo sub county Police Commander Patrick Onsando said the irate villagers also cut down trees that had been planted on one side of the African Christian Community Training Center, which also houses a clinic.
He said though no person was injured in the incident, the suspects also destroyed a guest house and stole medical equipment and medicine worth millions of shillings.
"We are looking for other suspects who worked with those in custody to cause the destruction. They disappeared when they learnt we were looking for them. We will continue to pursue them even though we urge them to surrender," he told the Standard.
Onsando said some of the stolen property has since been recovered, adding that the police will not allow such happenings.
"We have established that the residents were using unlawful means to take over the land. We will not allow this kind of impunity," he added.
Area chief Bernard Muga condemned the attack, saying the organisation has been helping locals.
