With just a month since the death of area MP Ken Okoth, at least 24 candidates have expressed interest in competing, with the party settling on competitive nominations.

As she made entry with her father into Kamkunji grounds, a number of social media users predicted that Ms Odinga was to be among contestants.

In 2017, Rosemary had expressed her interest in the seat, but she pulled out later due to illness and perhaps pressure from certain ODM quarters.

"I love the people of Kibra and that's why I came. I am not contesting. I am a voter here and it's nice to share with our people as they prepare to chose next MP," she said.

But an insider, who spoke in confidence, said the family weighed on repercussions of having her as a candidate before advising her to pull out.

Also, the family was of the opinion that she recovers fully from blindness before venturing into politics again. They settled to have her on ballot in 2022.

"She was ready to contest but the family thought the move will see them as opportunistic. They also want her to fully recover," said the source.

He added: "Once this is over, she intends to come back in 2022. At this stage, she won't have much pressure and not many will criticise her."

The claims would not however be verified independently. At the Odinga's family, she's the only sibling with realistic chances of joining politics.

Among those candidates are Ken Okoth's brother Imran, who was heckled on Sunday during the mega rally that saw thousands turn up.

Imran pledged to continue with his brother’s agenda in supporting the education of children in the sprawling informal settlement.

Other aspirants paraded during the rally include Joshua Orero, Sigar Agumba, Kenyanito Dudi, Melvin Moraa, Ochieng Jera, DJ Chris Darlin, ODM youth leader Benson Musungu, Steve Oguwa, Brian Owino and Obarics Ochieng’.

Toi Ogola, John Otieno Mila, Gore Mohammed, Lumumba Owade, Robinson Odhiambo, Ojijo Obama and Ngesa Mbarare are also in the race.
