Four people are feared dead after their vehicle plunged into the Indian Ocean at the Likoni ferry channel in Mombasa.
Eyewitnesses said the vehicle which was being driven by a lady slid back from MV Harambee moments after driving into the ferry from the mainland side of the channel.
One of the eyewitnesses, Mr Mlei Maajaliwa, said among the occupants, was a woman carrying a boy.
Likoni Sub County Police Commander Benjamin Rotich said the vehicle is suspected to have had four persons on board.
"The woman was the driver, the information we have indicates they were four," he said.
Witnesses said the driver was initially locked up in an argument with ferry officials after using the wrong ramp to drive her vehicle into the ferry.
“The officials had stopped the woman after she was seen accessing the ferry from the side which is used by people with KFS special passes,” an eyewitness said.
KFS officials said that the incident is being investigated and attempts to retrieve the vehicle and its occupants have since kicked off.
However, no success had been recorded by Sunday night.
“Neither the car nor the occupants have been retrieved. We share our sincere sympathies to the affected as the salvage operations continue," KFS wrote on its Facebook page.
