Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha has now written to Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) chief executive officer Twalib Mbarak after the University of Nairobi VC Prof Stephen Kiama Gitahi refused to leave office following the revocation of his appointment.
Magoha, in the letter, has asked Twalib and his team to probe the exercise conducted by Public Service Commission (PSC) that saw Kiama fronted for the position of the Vice Chancellor.
The CS had also dissolved the UoN council after the revocation of the appointment.
During the revocation, Magoha did not clearly outline the reasons behind the move.
Prof Kiama has, however, informed the students and entire staff that he remains as the VC despite the changes.
The anti-corruption agency is now expected to probe the matter before the next step.
“As you may be aware, the Public Service Commission completed the process of advertising, shortlisting and interviewing candidates for the position of vice-chancellor and submitted the results to the university council for further action. The action was meant to pave the way for proper consultation before the appointment of a suitable candidate,” reads the letter dated January 17, quoted by Daily Nation.
The revocation of the appointment of Kiama has caused confusion at the institution.
Fate of the VC now hangs in balance after Magoha pulled the move.
The acting deputy vice-chancellor (finance, planning and development), Prof Madara Ogot has since told the students and staff that Kiama is not the Vice Chancellor as the rift in the staff widen.
