The relocation of Kachok dump site in Kisumu continues to be a controversial issue, even after the county government's ability to acquire an alternative land for the purpose.
Despite attempts to relocate the dumpsite to a Sh27 million land bought by the previous regime under former governor Jackton Ranguma, it has emerged that trucks are still dumping garbage at the site.
The inability to clear the area of the garbage is despite the fact that the relocation plan has been receiving a Sh10 million allocation each year, since the introduction of counties in 2013.
City Manager Dorris Ombara told Standard that the county leadership is doing its best to manage the fresh heaps of garbage, which has seen a return of street boys at the site.
“We are in the process of implementing our waste management strategy,” she said on Tuesday, amid complains from residents regarding the stench emanating from the site.
Street children operating at the site on Wednesday expressed relief that trucks have began dumping fresh garbage at the site, adding that they can now scavenge waste stuff to sell.
"We were worried when the county government started relocating the dumpsite but we are glad because they are yet to find an alternative site to relocate it,” one of them said.
At the same time, two brothers; Kishar Dayjili and Nilesh Dayalgi are claiming ownership of the land, a case that has been running for nine years.
The French government under the Kisumu Urban Project has also allocated some money for the relocation of the site.
