President Uhuru Kenyatta has joined other leaders and the entire nation in mourning the demise of 29 people following landslides in West Pokot.

The President said that he is saddened by the incident, adding that his prayers are with the family after it emerged that the death toll is still rising. 

He also ordered for the deployment of Kenya Defense Forces to the region as rescue efforts continue.

Twelve of the victims of the landslides hail from Parua and Tapach while the rest come from Tamkal. 

Uhuru said that he received the news about the incident with deep shock, adding that his government will not forget about the families of the deceased during this moment of trial.

“I have since today morning been following with great sadness the ongoing rescue operation in West Pokot County following the devastating landslide that was triggered by the heavy rains that are being experienced in most parts of the country,” he said. 

The head of state confirmed that he has directed various government officials to ensure that resources are deployed to the areas affected by landslides to counter the situation.

"I have directed the deployment of resources including rescue personnel from our various security and humanitarian agencies covering the Kenya Defence Forces, the National Police Service and Special Programmes to the affected region” he added. 

Leaders across the nation have also condoled with the victims of the landslides.
