Opposition Chief Raila Odinga has joined the nation in mourning the demise of Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore.

In a tweet, Odinga said the death of Collymore is not only a big blow to Safaricom,  but also the entire nation. 

Odinga noted that Bob, who died of cancer, made a huge contribution to the economic growth of Kenya. 

He eulogised him as a distinguished corporate leader who gave his best during his lifetime.

 “My condolences go out to the friends and family of Mr Bob Collymore as well as the entire Safaricom fraternity. Bob served our country with dedication and sustained us as a communication hub in Africa. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” he said in his message

Meanwhile, President Uhuru Kenyatta has also mourned the deceased termed him 'a distinguished corporate leader'.

"It is with deep sadness that I have this morning received news of the death of Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore after years of battling cancer. As a country, we've lost a distinguished corporate leader whose contribution to our national wellbeing will be missed," he said.

Safaricom Chairman Nicholas Nganga announced the passing away of the 61-year-old boss in a statement on Monday morning.

"It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing away of Robert (Bob) William Collymore, CEO of Safaricom PLC which occurred at his Nairobi home in the morning of 1st July, 2019," Safaricom's statement read in part.
