Mandera governor Ali Roba is among the several county bosses who won’t get a chance to defend their seats come 2022.
The reason is that they are not mandated to run for more than two consecutive terms. Governor Roba has got tough political choices to make for him to stay in active politics post-2022.
He might decide to polish his loyalty to both president Uhuru Kenyatta and DP Dr Wiliam Ruto. That will be a political gesture that will be geared towards him landing a state job after gubernatorial duties.
The governor might also make a bold step and vie for another elective position within Mandera county although it could look like a political suicide.
Being the first governor of Mandera he couldn’t wish his name to quickly vanish. Mandera is among the North Eastern counties and it borders Somalia.
Security, education and health have been the main development agenda for Roba. Hence he must be having sleepless nights figuring out on how to remain politically relevant at the end of his constitutional term.
The outspoken Mandera county boss has been so vocal in spearheading development programs across Mandera and successfully defended his seat in a tough race in 2017.
He might opt to quit elective politics and focus on providing direction and advice to the upcoming leaders of Mandera county.
