Speaking during an Inua Mama rally in Kamukunji, the outspoken DP Ruto-backing legislator appeared to suggest that the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) was a cynical attempt to create more political positions to reward individuals.

"We don't want a referendum that will add more burden. Is that what you want? If it comes here you will reject it? (Hatutaki referendum yenye itaongeza mzigo. Mnataka hiyo wananchi? Ikikuja hapa matafanya nini, si mtaikataa kabisa?)" the Nakuru senator said.

Susan Kihika's strong remarks come in the context of a raging debate on the BBI and Punguza Mizigo initiatives that continue to consume the national discourse.

DP Ruto allies have threatened to throw their weight behind Thirdway Alliance's Dr Ekuru Aukot's Punguza Mizigo initiative.

Veteran opposition and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga has called on Kenyan's to ignore Punguza Mizigo and wait for the recommendations of the BBI committee.

The BBI report is in the process of being compiled before being submitted to President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga.

After Kenyans have been filled in on its contents and offered an opportunity to weigh in on it, a referendum is expected to follow.
