Emerging details indicate that the Rift Valley region leads the nation with regards to betting addiction and involvement.

According to the latest survey by Infotrak, Rift Valley tops the list in the number of betting individuals with 30 per cent, followed by Nairobi with 19%.

Third in the list is the Central Kenya region where 12 percent of the locals were found to be regular participants in the exercise.

Nyanza, North Eastern and Coast regions were the least affected with 9%, 5%, and 3% respectively, in the poll findings released on Thursday.

According to the survey, 74 percent of gamblers are men while only the 26% are women.

It was also discovered that 70 percent of gamblers are the youth, aged between 18 and 35.

During the survey it emerged that 17 per cent of Kenyans who lose bets would consider suicide as a way out, a finding that paints how 

"I think this is just the highlight of the problem that manifests in our society through things like financial pressure which points to mental health.  It is an indication that we might just have a pandemic,” Infotrak’s Special Projects and Loyalty Research Manager Walter Nyakundi said as quoted by Standard.

The survey comes at a time when the government has stopped operations of most of the leading betting firms in the nation.
