On Tuesday, family spokesman Lee Njiru confirmed that the octogenarian was admitted at the facility for regular check-ups, adding that there is 'nothing to worry'.

Njiru further said Mzee Moi was cheerful and thanked members of the public for 'messages of goodwill and recovery'.

“The true position is that Mzee Moi is in hospital being attended to by a professional medical team led by his personal physician, Dr David Silverstein," he said.

"He is alert and conscious of his surroundings," Mr Lee Njiru, the former Head of State's press secretary, said in a statement.

On Tuesday, a source at the hospital said Mzee Moi was “on restricted visits at the moment, and his doctor is currently keeping an eye on his lungs”.

Moi, 95, had been admitted at the facility two weeks ago before his latest return. A KANU youth official on Tuesday said Moi was taken to the facility last Thursday.

The official, who spoke in confidence, also said the elderly statesman had been taken to ICU over breathing difficulties in Nairobi Hospital.

His condition has been recurring since last year. In May this year, Moi could not get out of his vehicle to witness the burial of his eldest son Jonathan Moi.

Moi was in charge of the country for 24 years. He assumed powers following the death of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, the founding father of the country.
