Showering with cold water is a risky affair; whether in the swimming pool or a shower, an abrupt exposure to cold water could expose some people to certain heart risks like a heart attack.

Having a cold shower increases the heart rate over a short period of time which results in a heart attack. 

In an interview with Today, Helen L Glassberg,  a cardiovascular specialist explained exposure to cold water could cause more harm than good.

noted that it causes restrictions of the blood vessels which is believed to increase the heart rate and the blood pressure. 

This has a negative impact on the hear and you could end up suffering from a heart attack as a result. 

“Abrupt exposure to cold water causes your blood vessels to restrict, causes you to take a deep breath, causes your heart rate and blood pressure to potentially go up and this could potentially cause a stressor on the heart,”  Glassberg explained.

Before having a shower it is important for one to acclimatise first reason being, abrupt exposure to cold water brings about heart-related issues.

 She further warned people suffering from any heart-related problems to avoid taking cold showers. “I’m not sure if the health benefits are strong enough to outweigh the risks. So for anyone with risk, I’d caution them before jumping into something like that," she added.
