Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen has affirmed that he doesn’t support eviction of squatters from the Mau Forest.
In a phone interview with Citizen TV on Monday, the lawmaker said that the Mau eviction is an illegal and inhuman process considering the fact that President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy President William Ruto had promised to ensure that everyone is settled.
He divulged that the eviction of the squatters from the forest will affect them in different ways, adding that they are human beings just like other Kenyans.
The senator insisted that the government should stop the planned eviction until a further notice.
"Citizens who are residing in Mau voted to ensure their children attend school. Today, the children of Uhuru Kenyatta, Tobiko, Ruto and Murkomen and even Ledama are in school. Those children in Mau are not children of a lesser God (Wananchi walioko huko Mau walipiga kura ili kuhakikisha watoto wao wameenda shule. Hii leo watoto wa Uhuru Kenyatta, Tobiko, DP Ruto, Murkomen na hata Ledama wako shule Those children in Mau are not children of a lesser God),” Murkomen said in a video shared by Citizen TV on Twitter.
He urged the national goverment to ensure that the children in 15 schools, which are set for demolition are allowed to go back to school with immediate effect so that they can pursue their studies.
“The government is attempting to use force to evict the residents of Mau. They would be going against human rights. The best way is ensuring that our children attend school starting today (Serikali ikijaribu kutumia nguvu kuwafurusha watu walioko Mau basi watakuwa wanakiuka haki za kibinadamu Njia bora ni kuhakikisha kuwa watoto wetu wanaenda shule kuanzia leo),” he noted the Senate Leader of Majority
