Two children have died of rabies in Igembe Central, Meru county after they were bitten by stray dogs marauding in Mpinda, Nthambiro and Kiengu villages.
The first child died on Friday while being transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital from Nyambene Sub-County Hospital while the second victim died while receiving treatment at the national referral hospital.
Nyambane Sub-County Hospital medical officer in charge Michael Kariuki confirmed that 40 people have been infected with the virus as stray dogs terrorise the villages.
He appealed to the victims to seek medical attention after getting infected as quickly as possible and asked the relevant government agencies to act fast.
Rabies is transmitted by bites from an infected dog and is incurable once signs start presenting.
