Two girls on Monday died after they were buried by a block of clay soil in Monyerero sub-location, Monyerero ward Kisii county.
The two were digging clay soil locally known as 'Ekebuse' to smear their house as the Christmas celebrations nears.
According to Ronald Mayaka an eyewitness, the two girls who are also sisters were buried in a hole where they were digging the soil.
Mayaka said that the two girls lost their lives on the way to hospital after residents rescued them from the hole.
"Resident helped to rescue the girls from the hole where they were buried. They had developed breathing difficulties and were rushed to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital but unfortunately they died on their way to hospital," said Mayaka.
It is common for the Gusii community to smear their houses with clay soil during Christmas holiday to celebrate.
