There are many things that will always be remembered about the World Cup. Among these things are goals scored by the former Argentina legend Diego Maradona.
In the 22nd June 1986 World Cup in Mexico, Diego Maradona scored two goals that will forever remain in the books of history as amazing goals to ever been scored. The two goal were scored in the quarter-finals match that saw Argentina take on England.
The first goal was after 51 minutes into the game. Maradona scored by help of his hand, hence got that goal called “The Hand of God goal.”
His second goal came after four minutes after his first goal. Diego Maradona dribbled past five England players to score. He dribbled past Beardsley, Reid, Butcher, Fenwick, Butcher (again), and even past goalkeeper Peter Shilton to score his second goal. His second goal become the “The Goal of the Century.”
Argentina won 2-1. They went into the semi-finals and finals. They won in the finals against West Germany to be crowned the 1986 World Cup winners.
With the two magical goals in the quarter-finals match, Diego Maradona won golden ball for player of the tournament.
After 1986, Argentina and England have since met twice only. 1998 FIFA World Cup, Argentina, and England met in the round of 16, where Argentina won in the shootouts.
2002 FIFA World Cup, they again faced each other, where England won 1-0 in a match that had the "longest lunch break in history" as millions stopped their afternoon work to watch the game on TV.
