Two police officers and a civilian were shot dead on Saturday night at Lokichar in Turkana South sub-county during a shootout that ensued when the officers were pursuing a lorry suspected to have been transporting stolen sugar.
The civilian was shot by police when they engaged the suspects.
Turkana county police commander Ronald Opili confirmed the incident and said another police officer sustained gunshot injuries on his hand.
“Three police officers were pursuing the lorry that was suspected to have been transporting 10 bags of sugar which was stolen in Lokichar the previous day. They gave a chase but when the lorry stopped, the occupants fired at the officers killing two of them,” said Opili.
The police boss said the driver of the lorry escaped.
He said police are investigating the matter to establish if the sugar was the one that was reported stolen.
