Tuesday’s game between Japan and South American powerhouse, Colombia, saw former West Ham and now Fiorentina midfielder Carlos Sanchez dismissed by centre referee Damir Skomina from Slovenia in the third minute of the entertaining match after a deliberate handball.

The midfielder tried to block a rebound shot by a Japanese player, who was to head into an empty net beyond the reach of David Ospina, the Colombian shot-stopper.

The referee awarded a penalty from which former Manchester United midfielder Shinji Kagawa gave the Asian nation a lead.

This became the second fastest red card in world cup history after Jose Alberto Batista of Uruguay who was sent off 54 seconds into the match against Scotland back in 1986 in Mexico.

Carlos Sanchez will miss the remaining group stage matches against Senegal and Poland.

Another record that was broken in the same game was that Japan became the first Asian nation to beat a South American nation in world cup history after seventeen previous attempts by the Asian nations.

This was after Yuyo Osako headed in the winning goal in the 73rd minute.
