Residents of Marioshioni ward have expressed fears over the alleged on-going Female Genital Mutilation practices in the area.
According to Ogiek Council of Elders Chairman Joseph Towett, more than 200 girls in Marioshioni Ward have secretly undergone cicumcision.
“More than 200 girls and women from over 13 households have already undergone the cut and we are fearing the numbers are rapidly increasing since the community members do not understand the dangers of these practices," Mr Towett said.
He added that the government is not doing much to educate the public on harmful traditions like Female Genital Mutilation.
“The practices are on-going normally because the government has not taken the initiative seriously to educate the comunities against such. It seems there is something wrong with the policy because we expected the government to have already poited out the hotspots and danger zones and should be working on the ground with these people, sadly there aren’t any,” Mr Towett said.
He noted that the communities in the area seem to be embracing the practice since the girls are volunteering to undergo the practice citing that the government has not educated them on its dangers.
