Over 2,000 illegal guns in the hands of herders in the North Rift region have been surrendered to the government for registration in the past one year.
The guns were surrendered by herders from Baringo, Pokot, Turkana and Samburu counties.
The government last year launched a drive to compel all illegal gun holders to surrender them for registration.
According to Rift Valley regional coordinator Wanyama Musiambo, most of the illegal guns are being used in cattle rustling which is rampant in the region.
Governors Benjamin Cheboi (Baringo), Simon Kachapin (West Pokot) and Josphat Nanok (Turkana) have been instrumental in persuading residents in their regions to surrender illegal guns.
“So far we have received over 2,000 guns which have been given to us voluntarily by herders from the pastoralist communities and we are still appealing to those who have not surrendered their guns to do so,” said Musiambo.
“It is not that we are taking the guns away from them; all we are doing is registering the guns so that we can establish who owns them and monitor how they are being used,” he added.
