Suspected Al-Shaabab militants attacked a passenger bus plying along the Wajir-Mandera road, leaving 12 people dead among them police officers.

Keynan said residents should not wait for the government to hunt down the suspects, but should participate in giving information to security agencies, and conducting vigilante arrests to ensure criminals behind the horrific attack are brought to book.

"As we wait for the government to hunt down the suspects, it is time for the public to not only volunteer intelligence to the security agencies but also conduct vigilante arrests on individuals hell bent on tainting our image, collapsing the public sector, killing and dividing," he said.

Keynan made the remarks on Saturday when he toured the area accompanied by other leaders from Wajir and Mandera counties.

"It is unfortunate that terrorists are roaming freely within our borders causing unacceptable levels of anxiety, fear and deaths," added Keynan who is the longest serving MP in Northern Kenya.

The driver of the bus and a passenger have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the attack in which 8 policemen, a doctor, a teacher, and 2 civilians were killed.

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday informed the country that security forces are pursuing the killers, and assured that the government will not relent in it's ruthless crackdown on the criminal elements.

"The Head of State further sends a strong warning and reminder to misguided elements operating within and outside of our national borders and whose actions harm innocent Kenyans that no effort will be spared in neutralizing the threat," read part of a statement from State House.
