More than 36 boats have been confiscated by the department of fisheries after the owners were caught fishing in Lake Naivasha illegally.
Mathew Ngila, the Naivasha Sub-county fisheries officer said this while addressing fishermen who had come to Lake Naivasha for a one day seminar on Wednesday.
“We have also confiscated more than 2,000 undersize nets. I want to warn all those who fish illegally that the fight against illegal fishing will continue despite all the challenges that we may encounter,” said Ngila.
Ngila added that there was great need to review the current laws and to teach the neighbouring communities on how to protect the water body.
“If caught doing illegal fishing, the fines have increased from Sh20,000 to Sh100,000. Under the new law, the eco-tourism boats will have to be registered, insured and also get a new license,” Ngila said.
He added: “We are working with the Nakuru County assembly to introduce by laws against illegal fishing. This is after the lifting of the annual fishing ban.”
