Apart from causing deaths, it caused widespread destruction of property and floods, weakening from a category four storm to a category three storm.

Meteorological experts say that the hurricane is the strongest on record in the Bahamas.

Bahamas Prime Minister Hubert Minnis called on the rest of the world to remember the country in their prayers as he showered the first responders with praise.

"We are in the midst of a historic tragedy in parts of the northern Bahamas,” Minnis said at a news conference late Monday afternoon according to the New York Times

“Our mission and focus now is search, rescue and recovery. I ask for your prayers for those in affected areas and for our first responders," he added.

The Hurricane National Centre warned that the risk that Hurricane Dorian posed remained high, saying that it expected even more serious effects.

"The threat of damaging winds and life-threatening storm surge remains high,” the National Weather Service office in Melbourne, Fla, wrote.

“There will be considerable impacts and damage to coastal areas, with at least some effects felt inland as well!” the centre said.
