Speaking at Moi Girls High School, Nairobi during Ken Okoth's memorial service, the former prime minister said that Okoth once told him he was his role model.

He also said that the former MP was a good friend to his son Fidel Odinga before he went overseas.

The African Union Special Envoy also said that Okoth had approached him before he contested for the Kibra parliamentary seat.

“Today everyone in Kibra is mourning because of the death of this young man. He was like a son to me. He was my son because he and Fidel were close. I knew him before he traveled overseas. When he was abroad, he did what was written in the biography. When he was in the country he came to me and told me I was his role model. He also said that he wanted to assist in leading Kibra and we have worked with him (Leo kila mtu Kibra ako na majonzi kwa sababu ya kifo ya huyu kijana. Huyu ni mtoto wangu. Mtoto wangu kabisa kwa sababu yeye na Fidel walikuwa namna hii. Nimemjua kabla hajaenda ng'ambo. Alipokuwa ng’ambo kule akafanya vile imeandikwa hapo. Na alipokuwa hapa alikuja akaniambia eti mimi ndiye amekuwa akiiga. I am his role model. Akaniimbia anataka kunisaidia katika constituency na yeye tumefanya naye kazi)," he said.

Okoth died on Friday, last week after a long battle with cancer.
