Nyamira's best performers in 2019's KCPE has a reason to smile after a good Samaritan came to his rescue and pledged to sponsor him through his four-year course in secondary school.

Caleb Orandi Obare (12) who hails from Kirwanda village in West Mugirango Constituency says that his dream of becoming a doctor was almost halted until luck came knocking.

“When the results were released last month, I was happy but my joy was short-lived. I  didn’t know I could score 410 marks but that came as a surprise. After the dust had settled, reality hit me that I could not join my dream school and pursue my career of becoming a medical doctor”, said Orandi.

His parents said that they had opted to enrol him in yet another local day school within the village (Gianchore Secondary) as they were unable to raise money to take their son to Kisii Boys School.

Orandi studied at Bright Heads Education Centre in Nyamira where a good Samaritan had offered to educate him through primary level.

Evans Nyachieng’a who works with the Kenya Literature Bureau (KLB) said he was moved by the plight of the pupil who comes from a poor family which can hardly afford two meals a day.

His (Caleb) case was highlighted in one of the social media platforms when Nyachieng'a stepped in.

“I spotted the plight of the boy in one of the social media networks and was so moved, the boy had good marks but the family had no means of sponsoring their boy to Kisii National school where he had been called to, the family is poor. I have offered to sponsor his secondary school education so that he can achieve the dream of becoming a doctor in the near future”, said Nyachieng’a on Monday at the boy's home.

He presented a cheque catering for his first year of school fees.

He added that he has been supporting education matters since 2007 by donating textbooks to various schools within West Mugirango Constituency noting that over 20 youths have gone through his hands and acquired jobs.

Nyachieng’a, who is eyeing the West Mugirango parliamentary seat asked those with goodwill to identify such deserving cases and offer a helping hand.

“We have many unidentified cases in our localities and my urge to leaders and people of goodwill is to offer a helping hand and educate the bright but needy children."

Nyachieng’a was speaking at the home of Caleb when he presented a pay-in slip to the family for the first year’s school fees.
