Home-based violence has reduced to 40 percent in Rongai sub-county, area chief Charles Koech has said.

Koech said violence in homes in Rongai was common, especially among married people and it involved children at times.

Speaking during a courtesy visit in the area, Koech attributed the violence to poverty, especially in areas like Kerobon which have low education advancement after high school.

Koech revealed that the use and availability of illicit brews had also contributed to violent crimes in homes. He said after vigorously fighting drinking in the areas, the level of violent crimes has gone down in comparison to the past few months.

Moses Rotich, the are sub-chief, said the reduction in alcohol consumption increased the production rate in the area as people now engage in more resourceful activities.

“I am happy my husband can now work in a tea firm and bring Sh200 in the evening. This was something which I could see happening few years ago,” said Jane Kwamboka, a local resident.

Rongai sub-county has been in the media in the recent past due to the consumption of illicit brews and drugs.
