Speaking Monday night in an interview on KTN, Captain Zaunga explained the difficulties that may be encountered during the recovery effort.

He said that the depth involved of about 60 metres would prove to be a challenge to the divers that need to be overcome.

What's more, the strong currents at the channel would have pushed the car away from where it had sunk, making it difficult to locate its exact position.

"Actually it is very difficult because of the depth involved; the depth is about 60 metres. It requires specialised equipment for the divers to go there and start searching and also not forgetting that is a channel whereby there are very strong currents," Captain Zaunga said in a video shared on YouTube. "They might dive there thinking the vehicle is there but it may end up in the port or the outer seas because it's being carried away by the current," he added.

Over 24 hours after the incident, the bodies have not yet been recovered with the Kenya Ferry Services (KFS) saying that it is in the process of procuring the necessary equipment that will be brought to bear on the recovery efforts.
