A family in Shimalavandu Village in Lurambi, Kakamega County have been left in a shock after their father committed suicide over a 'omenaless' meal.
The 61 years old, hanged himself using a sisal rope on Monday night in his bedroom.
Speaking to K24 Digital on Tuesday, the man's widow, Mary Khahoya, said that the man was served his meal without omena, which had been finished.
The man who walked into his family eating ugali, sukuma wiki and omena had expected to be served the same meal only for it to come missing the omena.
He asked his wife why his meal was missing omena and she told him it got finished.
“He greeted us, and went to the bedroom. I, thereafter, took his meal, ugali and sukuma wiki, to where he was. He asked why omena wasn’t part of the meal. I told him it was because he arrived late, and that the entire [omena] dish had been served to the other family members,” said Khahoya as quoted by K24 Digital.
The widow narrated that after finishing her house chores and was going to sleep, she was met with the body of her husband hanging from a rope.
“Later, when I went to the bedroom, I found his body hanging from a sisal rope tied to the rafters above our bed. I was shocked. I suspect he took his own life following the frustration of being served a meal without omena in the menu,” said Khahoya as quoted by K24 Digital.
His body was moved to Kakamega County Referral Hospital morgue.
The police have launched investigations into the probable cause of the man's death.
